This time around we are teaching public speaking through the method of acting, bringing in a seasoned actor and coach to train you how to develop character and present in public.

Nation Building School was the supporting partner of 2nd Kuala Lumpur International Youth Discourse (#KLIYD2017) for the second time!
We had a star-studded line-up with Prime Minister Dato' Seri Najib Razak, Defence Minister Dato' Seri Hishamuddin Hussein, Youth & Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin & Menteri Besar Perak Dato' Seri Zambry speaking at KLIYD! It was held on Sunday 3rd December 2017 in Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur. The 2nd KLIYD was themed "Embracing Total Security: Why It Matters". As our global populations grows to 9 billion by 2050, we are straining our world's limited resources. Our activities are changing the climate and destroying our biodiversity. As obesity is on the rise in developed countries, 1 billion around the world are malnourished. With the advent of the digital revolution, more than half of the current jobs will be lost to automation. We are more likely to be threatened by cyberattacks on our digital devices than from being hit from a bullet. These issues are nonconventional threats. Total security goes beyond traditional threats (e.g. conflicts, terrorism) and include nontraditional ones such as food security, climate security and cybersecurity. KLIYD intends to explore security holistically to prepare youths for the future. Our speakers included:
It was a wide-ranging forum on topics such as ASEAN security, fighting extremism, sustainability and climate change, job security and race relations. Our leadership team moderated two of the sessions. Principal Nafis Nazri moderated the session with Prof Dr Shashi Jayakumar and Dr Dino Patti Djalal on extremism amongst youth. Our Managing Principal Marques moderated the session with The Honourable YB Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, Minister of Defence. For our 2nd Just 3 Hours workshop, we touched on the area of rhetoric or the art of persuasion. Our Principal-cum-chief trainer Nafis Nazri, also the cofounder of TalentBase, led the team in conducting the workshop. A total of 18 attendants braved the morning and turned up at 10.00am in BAC PJ campus.
We started the event immediately with impromptu speech as their ice-breaker. Then, we introduced the concept of rhetoric as described by ancient philosopher as 'the art of persuasion'. It is understood in three ways: ethos, logos, pathos. For ethos, each participant is given a character to do an impression of in their respective groups. With logos, participants are given a statement and are asked to go to the wall which they think fits the statement (true or false). They will have to provide reasoning to why they think the statement is true or false. Finally, pathos is explained with a short video followed by their reactions. The participants were, then, given a short break where they were to prepare for their 'final speech', drawing lessons from the earlier exercises. All participants successfully delivered their speeches. After each speech, they were given feedback on their strengths and weaknesses. Some words from our lead trainer Nafis Nazri: An amazing day today at The 2nd Just 3 Hours! Today we delved deep into what the Art of Rhetoric is! We played different characters, toyed with emotions, reasoned with what is true and what is false. But what the most amazing thing was the ability of everyone in applying these concepts into a proper public speech! The diversity in style and delivery of our speakers was exceptional. Excellent job done to our speakers! Last year, Nation Building School initiated a leadership program called Guruship to expose, educate and empower youth to be the best version of themselves. The 90-day program consists of orientation, halfway review and graduation. During this period, they were taught the best practices of community organising and exposed to leaders from various backgrounds. A total of 49 Gurus graduated from the program.
This year, we have redesigned the Guruship. While youth development has always been our aim, we decided to deep dive into a critical issue -- youth unemployment. Globally, youth unemployment is close to a historic peak since the global recession and global financial crisis. According to ILO, over 71 million young between the ages of 14 and 24 are officially unemployed. The unofficial estimates could be significantly higher. In Malaysia itself, youth unemployment is triple of the average unemployment at 10.7%. Over 200,000 young graduates are unemployed. With this in mind, the Guruship is targeted for youth not in education, employment, or training (NEET) to ensure they have access to training and development. The Guruship is divided into 3 phases: Personal, Professional, People (3Ps). Personal: Participants are connected to leading figures from public, private and social sectors. This exposure allows them to expand their horizon on career prospects and entrepreneurship. Professional: Subsequently, participants are provided in-house career guidance such as resume, interview and networking. People: While job-hunting, participants organise community projects or campaigns (e.g. climate change, women empowerment, statelessness). They will harness soft skills such as communications, problem-solving and teamwork. These skills will be crucial when they seek employment. We have restructured the Guruship as well. As opposed to a 90-day program, we have converted it into monthly gatherings. During these Gatherings, Gurus share their progress in their studies and career, and are matched with fellow Gurus who can assist them. In addition, the Gatherings serve as a sounding board for their community projects or NGO's. We were inspired by its potential to be a mix of Benjamin Franklin's Junto (platform to share ideas), BNI (find opportunities to collaborate) and DrinkEntrepreneurs (easy-going way to meet new people). His explained this through a Kingsman scene: "The point is, Eggsy, nobody thanked me for any of them. Front page news and all these occasions are celebrity nonsense. Because it's the nature of Kingsman that our achievements remain secret." Founder of Kuala Lumpur's My Studio Works Ivan Heng shared the power of AR taking over the world, and thus the importance of keeping up to date with technology. Founder of Sarawak's NOMS On Street Phua TK Avertino (1995) revealed what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. He asked, how much you want to make? If you want to make small money, you can do it by yourself. If you want to make big money, you need a team. That is to say, no man is an island. No matter how strong you are you only have 24 hours a day. You need a team to build an empire. Founder of Saudi Arabia's VisionRENEWABLE Huzaifa Mubarak raised the importance of standing out given that degree and experience are common. So how do you do that? Be aware of expectations. Be bold. Be different. Deliver solutions. Enthusiasm. Life long learning. In summary:

Some key takeaways from Just Three Hours on Public Speaking with HRDF Certified Nina Nasir, Founder of Pursuka, an organisation promoting the importance of self love and happiness! A. Starting, Presenting and Ending 1. Most important parts? The start and the end. Reason? People always remember how you begin and how you end. 2. Golden rule? Signpost THREE key points. Too many key points? Consider broad categories. Try mind mapping. 3. What will be your strategy? Emotional or instructional? Long or short? Interactive? Persuasive? Demonstrate? Print or digital? Casual or formal? Check out Nina's game plan! B. Nina's OSA-TLP Public Speaking Game Plan 1. Objective: Why is the presentation important? Tip: Ask yourself, why is it important for you and your audience. 2. Subject: What will you present? Tip: The cleaner you are in your presentation, the more effective it is, especially when you have a large and diverse audience. 3. Audience: Who will be there? What do they like/dislike? What is their culture? Tip: Stalk your audience. Try Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter. 4. Time of the meeting. Tip: How do you feel at 5pm? Corporates may be tired, so think about chocolates and perfumes to freshen up senses. VCs may be energised because their day might have just started, so be extra ready. 5. Length of talk: How long do you have? Tip: Customise. Pitch. Goal: When you walk in people like you, when you walk out people like you even more. 6. Place: Where will you meet? Casual? Business? Leisure? Online? Tip: Choose a conducive place. Then familiarise yourself with the place. You're boss when you know the place in and out. C. Final remarks - Prepare. Why? To identify flaws. To focus on the audience. To explore all options. Be aware. Be confident. - Public speaking is a performance, so give it your best shot with a game plan to make it enjoyable! Nation Building School organised a Professional Development Program (PDP) for the Permata Interact mentors. PI is an interactive volunteer program teaching English to underprivileged students using tech and new learning tools. The 32 mentos are primarily from Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (KUPTM) and IPG students teaching English TESL. Held in iM4U Sentral on 7 October 2017, our PDP is focused on career development -- helping the mentors find their dream jobs with the right mindset, tools and systems. We divided PDP into 4 modules:
We played games on leadership, understood our highest hopes and darkest fears as well as taught techniques on networking and mastered LinkedIn. All in 4 hours and a half! (I was extremely excited to see the exciting headlines in your LinkedIn accounts!) I have the utmost respect for these mentors who volunteer to teach English to students every weekend for 6 months at a time. I feel duty-bound to supercharge their career and expose them to leadership opportunities. Nur Hassan, Zahidah Husna Zulkifli, Amiruddin Ismail, Nurzaidah Azharuddin - you inspire me. Be open to talk about mistakes and failures, and be sure to fix them if possible; if not, quickly apologize, learn, and use the experience gained to improve before moving forward and leading your team to success. The new team, NBS 2.0 are revisiting the fundamentals of this 2-year old youth NGO from our vision to operations. Our purpose of developing young people remains. However, the strategy to achieve our goals is being redesigned to match the ever-changing youth landscape. The newly-minted Principals Dr. Marcus Lim, Pixie Cigar, Nafis Nazri and Dzulhilmy Bin Mohammad are quickly transitioning into their leadership role. Co-founders Marques Jeevan Menon and Zaim Mohzani are taking a back seat to allow the new team to chart the new direction for NBS. We just turned two years old — and we have a new team!
Nation Building School was founded on 1st August 2015 by four young Malaysians — Zaim Mohzani, Marques Jeevan, Noreen Nattassa and David Kan. We were inexperienced, we had little money, few connections. But, we had passion to build a platform to develop young people. Fast forward two years later, we have organised, co-organised and supported over 100 youth initiatives involving over 3,000 youth in Malaysia! Our greatest achievement, thus far, has been to activate 49 young souls through our #Guruship leadership incubator. We have witnessed them grow as aspiring leaders to chart their own destiny. Many of them have graduated, joined or started their own organisations and made history! As with any organisation, for us to sustain for many years ahead, we need fresh blood. At the onset of our 2nd birthday, we decided to handover Nation Building School to our Gurus to bring NBS to greater heights. Two of the co-founders will remain in the team to play an advisory role.
