On 16th January 2023, 10 founding members of the Malaysia Jobs Coalition met up in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the strategic direction and priorities for the year.

Among the key points raised were the underemployment crisis affecting 2.4 million Malaysians is not receiving the necessary attention from the media and policymakers. Underemployment tend to affect women and young people more than others. Government policy such as JaminKerja has tended to be short-term in nature and may not address the root causes such as skills mismatch. The members agreed on the complexity of jobs and the labour markets.

As such, MJC has agreed to identify and clarify the problem further and to promote collaboration between members. The coalition will also be meeting and engaging various stakeholders regarding the issue.

The founding members are as follows:
  • Mr Zaim Mohzani (Co-Founder, Nation Building School)
  • Mr Voon Zhen Yi (Founder, Centre for Democracy, Innovation and Knowledge -CerDIK)
  • Ms Raudhah Nazran (CEO & Founder, Accelerate Global)
  • Mr Devasharma Gangadaran (CEO, MySkills Foundation)
  • Mr Chun Wah Hoo AKA Wahoo (Managing Director, NGOhub)
  • Dr Teh Su Thye (CEO, Global Peace Foundation Malaysia)
  • Mr Marques Jeevan Menon (Co-Founder, Nation Building School)
  • Ms Ambika Sangaran (COO, Mereka)
  • Mr Kelvin Tan (Co-Founder & CEO, Project ID)
  • [Missing] Mr Ahmad Luqman Al-Hakim Khairol Anuar (Co-Founder, SiswaBalik)

Malaysia Jobs Coalition (MJC) champions a job for every Malaysian.

We advocate the right to work the same way we have the right to education and healthcare. MJC is an independent coalition of progressive civil society organisations, social enterprises and citizens.
We focus on achieving full employment (or zero unemployment), promoting decent work and tackling underemployment and youth unemployment. We intend to collaborate with the Government, private sector, trade unions and marginalised groups (e.g. Orang Asli, OKU, former convicts, military veterans, single mothers).

Problem Statement (Why do we need to exist?)

  1. Low-Paying Jobs: One of the most critical issues for people is jobs and their livelihoods. Long before the pandemic, skills mismatch has plagued the labour market: over 70% of the jobs are low-skilled and semi-skilled, coupled with wage stagnation. The market is not ready to provide high-skilled and high-paying jobs.
  2. Underemployment and Youth Unemployment Crisis: The pandemic has worsened with over 2.4 million Malaysians underemployed with most of them involved in the gig economy. Youth unemployment remains above 10% – triple the national unemployment rate! The Government’s response, such as JaminKerja and employment incentives, do little to tackle the root causes and long-term problems.
  3. Conversation dominated by “Experts”: Media reporting on employment is always dominated by economists and analysts using complex and technical terms. This makes it difficult for people to better understand and contribute to the discourse.
  • Thus, MJC intends to make the discussion on jobs accessible to all people while working with stakeholders to address these key issues.

Aims (What are we trying to achieve?)

  1. Achieve full employment through progressive economic policy that boosts employment, wages and job quality
  2. Promote decent work for all Malaysians, especially in having productive work, fair income, a safe environment, and social protection;
  3. Address youth unemployment and underemployment crisis affecting over 2.4 million Malaysians in low-skilled and gig jobs;
  4. Monitor government policies on employment from its development to implementation, identify potential gaps, outline areas for improvements and hold the government accountable.

Initiatives (How are going to actualise our aims?)

  1. Media statements
  2. Public surveys
  3. Consultation with stakeholders (e.g. Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysian Trades Union Congress - MTUC, Malaysian Employers Federation - MEF)
  4. Engagements with policymakers (e.g. Members of Parliament, political parties) and relevant organisations
  5. Capacity-building programmes for unemployed persons and groups

Just 3 Hours : “Empathy: Listening to Yourself and Others” is the fifth workshop organized by Nation Building School.

In the previous 4 workshops, 3 were on public speaking and the latest one was on artificial intelligence.  The Nation Building School is now looking into more diverse but highly impactful topics that the youth can implement in their daily lives. For this fifth workshop, this topic “Empathy: Listening to Yourself and Others” is specifically related to psychological knowledge and aims to enhance mental wellbeing in the workplace, in school, and at home.

1st Young CHangemakers (YC) Gathering

2/7/2018

Wow! This has to be the most fun Nation Building School event has ever organised!

The idea behind the #YoungChangemakers was simple. We noticed there are little opportunities for engagements between young changemakers (NGOs, entrepreneurs, activists). What I say engagement, I mean talking and chilling. We found while we tend to meet each other at events like forums and volunteering, the environment wasn't always conducive to have a chat. This makes the avenue for collaboration limited as well. With so much happening in the youth ecosystem, Imagine all the wasted opportunities!

Hence, the Young Changemakers Gathering (YC) was born! Casual monthly gatherings to meet, mingle and share thoughts & ideas. Nothing serious, nothing formal. We only had one agenda: to allow 3 organisations to showcase their initiatives.

So, we had our first YC yesterday night! We brought in 3 amazing organisations: Sedunia, The Picha Project & Me.reka Makerspace. We made all 3 presenters - Faris, Suzanne, Rashvin to present in #PechaKucha. They made us laugh, they made us cry but most importantly, they made us inspired. Many who came told me they went back with new friends and fire in the belly for social impact.

Oh and sorry for the packed room. Liberal Latte Coffee Trade could only fit 50 pax comfortably but we had 80 people! Ooppss! Excited for the next one!!

New year, new idea!

Your favourite school, Nation Building School needs your support for our #CareerClinic.

Over 55,000 young graduates in Malaysia are unemployed due to many reasons -- skills mismatch, poor command of English, lack of working experience.

We plan to do something about this stubbornly high youth unemployment!

NBS is launching Career Clinic to help 200 unemployed university graduates through 6 series of workshops in 6 locations in Klang Valley this year!

We can't do this alone. We need your help!

Here's how you can help our project in our 1st phase:
1. Sign up as a member at this crowd-pledging platform Actyvate at http://actyvate.my
2. Go to our project page and LIKE it at http://actyvate.my/project/career-clinic

Let's do something for our fellow young Malaysians! Thank you in advance!
