Youth on 'Let's Break Tradition'

10/17/2017

#LetsBreakTradition in #Employability and #Entrepreneurship by #FYP#ICP students at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Nation Building School and TEGAS Digital Innovation Hub.

Assistant Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia Syed Nizamuddin Sayed Khassim (1989) started by sharing that sometimes you have this sense of achievement where you could be proud of, but could never share. His explained this through a Kingsman scene: "The point is, Eggsy, nobody thanked me for any of them. Front page news and all these occasions are celebrity nonsense. Because it's the nature of Kingsman that our achievements remain secret."

Founder of Kuala Lumpur's My Studio Works Ivan Heng shared the power of AR taking over the world, and thus the importance of keeping up to date with technology.

Founder of Sarawak's NOMS On Street Phua TK Avertino (1995) revealed what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur. He asked, how much you want to make? If you want to make small money, you can do it by yourself. If you want to make big money, you need a team. That is to say, no man is an island. No matter how strong you are you only have 24 hours a day. You need a team to build an empire.

Founder of Saudi Arabia's VisionRENEWABLE Huzaifa Mubarak raised the importance of standing out given that degree and experience are common. So how do you do that? Be aware of expectations. Be bold. Be different. Deliver solutions. Enthusiasm. Life long learning.

In summary:
  • Do not put all your eggs into one basket. Diversify.
  • Life is all about problems.
  • Entrepreneurship is about solving problems.
  • Money is not everything, but everything needs money. Money is therefore an enabler to everything.
  • Opportunities do not wait for you, so take them, hustle and innovate to deliver its solutions.
  • There is no age limit to success. In fact, the younger you are the better because you will have less commitment, so use your youth to your advantage.
  • Let go of what is unproductive.
  • If you want to go fast, go by yourself. If you want to go far, go with a team.
  • Respect comes when you give, not when you take.
  • When you do things, keep yourself in silence. Let your success do the talking!

Workshop: Just 3 Hours To Master Public Speaking

10/14/2017

Did you know that glossophobia is a fear of public speaking? And it accounts for up to 70% of the world's phobias?

Fear not, Nation Building School is here for you!

Some key takeaways from Just Three Hours on Public Speaking with HRDF Certified Nina Nasir, Founder of Pursuka, an organisation promoting the importance of self love and happiness!

A. Starting, Presenting and Ending

1. Most important parts? The start and the end. Reason? People always remember how you begin and how you end.

2. Golden rule? Signpost THREE key points. Too many key points? Consider broad categories. Try mind mapping.

3. What will be your strategy? Emotional or instructional? Long or short? Interactive? Persuasive? Demonstrate? Print or digital? Casual or formal? Check out Nina's game plan!

B. Nina's OSA-TLP Public Speaking Game Plan

1. Objective: Why is the presentation important? Tip: Ask yourself, why is it important for you and your audience.

2. Subject: What will you present? Tip: The cleaner you are in your presentation, the more effective it is, especially when you have a large and diverse audience.

3. Audience: Who will be there? What do they like/dislike? What is their culture? Tip: Stalk your audience. Try Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.

4. Time of the meeting. Tip: How do you feel at 5pm? Corporates may be tired, so think about chocolates and perfumes to freshen up senses. VCs may be energised because their day might have just started, so be extra ready.

5. Length of talk: How long do you have? Tip: Customise. Pitch. Goal: When you walk in people like you, when you walk out people like you even more.

6. Place: Where will you meet? Casual? Business? Leisure? Online? Tip: Choose a conducive place. Then familiarise yourself with the place. You're boss when you know the place in and out.

C. Final remarks

- Prepare. Why? To identify flaws. To focus on the audience. To explore all options. Be aware. Be confident.

- Public speaking is a performance, so give it your best shot with a game plan to make it enjoyable!

If you're loving "some" of these gems, do keep a look out for our next Just Three Hours to "fully" gain and sharpen a superpower (skill)! @ VSQ@PJ City Centre

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR PERMATA INTERACT

10/8/2017

A fun day with Permata Interact yesterday!

Nation Building School organised a Professional Development Program (PDP) for the Permata Interact mentors. PI is an interactive volunteer program teaching English to underprivileged students using tech and new learning tools. The 32 mentos are primarily from Kolej Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (KUPTM) and IPG students teaching English TESL.

Held in iM4U Sentral on 7 October 2017, our PDP is focused on career development -- helping the mentors find their dream jobs with the right mindset, tools and systems. We divided PDP into 4 modules:
  1. Discovery: discovering yourself and your interests
  2. Resourcefulness: finding the tools to find the right resources
  3. Networking: strategies and tips to build a world-class network to find business and career opportunities
  4. Professional branding: enhancing your professional branding through LinkedIn and resume

We played games on leadership, understood our highest hopes and darkest fears as well as taught techniques on networking and mastered LinkedIn. All in 4 hours and a half! (I was extremely excited to see the exciting headlines in your LinkedIn accounts!)

I have the utmost respect for these mentors who volunteer to teach English to students every weekend for 6 months at a time. I feel duty-bound to supercharge their career and expose them to leadership opportunities. Nur Hassan, Zahidah Husna Zulkifli, Amiruddin Ismail, Nurzaidah Azharuddin - you inspire me.

My appreciation to Nafis Nazri, NBS Principal and Co-Founder of TalentBase for using your expertise on training and development with the mentors.

Thank you Izzana Salleh and Yana for entrusting us with this program. Here's to a bigger, stronger and more passionate Permata Interact!

Leadership Forum in Kuching, Sarawak

In the words of our Principal Dr Marcus Lim based in Kuching, Sarawak:

#Leadership101 #BreakingYourBoundaries features two of the #BestLeaders in #Kuching #Sarawak, brought to you by a team of #Young, #Hungry #ICP #FYP #Business #Students from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak and Nation Building School!

Speaker 1: Amelia Lim Wen Ching shared #Leadership tips from her experience as #Founder of #SuperWorms, an unconventional enterprise that uses worms as a source for economic activity creation and as a solution for food waste management:

Tip 1. Be open to talk about mistakes and failures, and be sure to fix them if possible; if not, quickly apologize, learn, and use the experience gained to improve before moving forward and leading your team to success.

Tip 2. Why compete if we can collaborate? It’s cost and time friendly, so take the lead and create collaboration opportunities!

Tip 3. Know what attitude you currently have, and shape it positively. You have Japanese “can do” attitude if you believe that if one can do, I can do; if no one can do, I must do. You have Malaysian “boleh” attitude if you believe that if one can do, let him do; if no one can do, what can I do. You have Singaporean “kiasu kiasi” attitude if you believe that if nobody do, I better not do; if everyone do, I die die must do. Needless to say, your attitude is contagious as a leader, so form good attitudes, wisely!

Speaker 2: Caitlyn Ong led the way in giving back as a Swinburne Sarawak graduate by sharing her experience leading as Google Business Group Chapter Manager and #President of #SwinburneEntrepreneurshipClub:

Tip 4. Know and invest in yourself to become the best version of yourself. This is important before and after stepping up to lead to be accepted by and relatable to others that you serve.

Tip 5. You've got to stay true to what you say and to do what you say you will do in order to inspire, build, and sustain a culture of honest doers.

Tip 6. You don’t always have to be tough, but you’ve got to be firm, especially in decision making.

Tip 7. Share information to create win-win situations, internally as well as externally.

Finally, a very big #ShoutOut and #ThankYou to #Sponsors iCube Innovation and John's Pie for the awesome venue and mouthwatering refreshments – we at #SwinburneSarawak and #NationBuildingSchoolreally appreciate the very kind gesture and support!

Special thanks to Octavia Teo for moderating the session and Michelle Tan, Marisa Tan, and Jeannie Tan (wow, just realized all Tans ;p) for the Instagrammable photos!

What's next?

John’s Pie will be opening at The Spring Shopping Centre, Kuching soon, so do keep a lookout #CatCity #KuchingEats #KuchingFood!

Caitlyn invites you to HackWeekend KCH in conjunction with Forum Belia TEGAS this October 12 to 14 (p/s: promocode “swinbeeshack” for 20% discount for Swinburne students).

Amelia will be contributing to Plant a Seed, an e-waste, solid waste, and food waste recycling initiative, at The Spring this November 11, so do drop by to learn more, especially about worms and how they translate into better food waste management.
